MKOMAZI NATIONAL PARK

An untouched breathtaking beauty exhibiting unique natural treasures, an immense sense of space and a much-needed bridge between the northern circuit and coastal attractions, Mkomazi National Park is a true Sahel jewel.Covering an area of 3,245km², Mkomazi is a magnificent northern Tanzania park that features rare wildlife species, spectacular mountains peaks, exotic landscapes, and vegetation. For a southern tip of the Sahel zone, Mkomazi is a classic dry-country reserve of grey-green scrubby bushes, ancient baobab trees, and isolated rocky hills. You can take a stroll along the seas of the bush to the Savannah woodlands and shallow valleys of grassland.

Wildlife

Typical of the arid nyika are animals such as the giraffe, oryx, gerenuk, hartebeest, lesser kudu, eland, impala and Grant’s gazelle, elephant, buffalo, and numerous predators, including lion, leopard, and cheetah. The endangered African Wild dog and Black rhino have also been re-introduced.

Bird Watching

With over 400 species of birdlife including the doves, hornbills, weavers and guinea-fowl as well as striking species of the martial eagle and violet wood-hoopoe, birding in Mkomazi is good. Also watch out for cobalt, chested vulturine, guinea fowl, ostrich, kori bustard, secretary bird and the migratory Eurasian roller!.
